Thank you attendees and presenters for a successful day!

The Central Ohio Rain Garden Initiative (CORGI) recently held its fall meeting at our new office; we tested our capacity with about 50 attendees from all over the state consisting of fellow Soil and Water districts, engineers, consultants, master gardeners, watershed groups, and city and municipal representatives. Our presentations were diverse in nature.  We learned about Cincinnati’s Project Groundwork and our own BluePrint Columbus from Andrew Reynolds of Cincinnati MSD and Margie Hiermer of RAMA consultant group, respectively.  Both innovative green infrastructure programs deal as much with the social nature of their constituents as with stormwater management. More technical coverage was given to rain garden and bioretention performance from ecologist Dr. Jay Martin and hydrologists Dr. William Shuster and Rob Darner. Rain gardens are in fact responsible for detectable positive impacts on water quality and water quality, and citing this research allows technicians to better promote them. Finally, practical aspects of program and garden implementation were covered by Amy Dutt of Urban Wild (and CORGI partner), John McManus of Clermont SWCD, Jennifer Grieser of Cleveland Metroparks, and Steve Foltz, director of Horticulture at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens. Steve’s presentation was particularly valuable for those wishing to attract more peacocks to their gardens! Finally, our director Jennifer Fish and yours truly spoke “on the fly” and provided and update on CORGI and the Gardening for Clean Water project.
